Saturday Miscellanea (Late September Edition)

Figure a Sea, the collaboration between choreographer Deborah Hay and Laurie Anderson  yesterday at Dansens Hus was, sadly, a huge disappointment. Behind lofty words there’s no denying that it was an hour of no real sense of direction, no real substance. And oh, the music -I’ve been following Laurie Anderson closely through her career, and she has slowly moved from producing brilliant masterpieces to bland fragments of tired, unengaging soundscapes. Last night’s music sounded like something she’d found while rummaging through some left-over stuff on an old hard drive, and I couldn’t help asking myself what on earth she’d been smoking.

Every member of the Cullberg ballet deserves credit for their huge dedication though, but that’s about it.
