The more I think about how the new NIN Ghosts album was released to the public, the more I’m convinced it’s a stroke of genius in its simplicity.
Give the consumer a wide range of choices – from a free album, to a cheap ($5, expanded) album, all the way to a huge ($300, “Ultra-deluxe, limited edition”) collection with all the extras. You want free? You’ve got it. Cheap? Oh yes. Expensive collectible? But of course.
And the relatively few hardcore fans who decide to opt for the expensive versions naturally subsidize those who choose to get the cheaper/free versions.
Personally I’m enjoying the $5 version with the stunningly beautiful, complimentary 40-page pdf.
