Thursday evening the Concert Hall presented an evening with works by Lutoslawski and Nielsen, and violinist Christian Tetzlaff playing Brahms Violin Concerto.
I discovered Tetzlaff last year when his Bach album with Sonatas and Partitas received a lot of attention. It became Editors Choice in Gramophone August 2007 and Duncan Druce only had nice things to say: …unlocking the expressive potential…. Tetzlaff realises the virtuosity of Bach’s writing … finales are truly thrilling, full of temperament and fire… I’d urge you to investigate this outstanding set.
Tetzlaff didn’t let the live audience down – combining excellent technique with warmth and intelligence, he managed to point out the humanity in the concerto and not just turn it into a vehicle for virtuoso display.
As an extra we were treated with the Largo from the Sonata no 3 for solo violin by Bach.
Tetzlaff is all over the place this spring – check out his concert schedule.
